What is Faith?

This may seem like an obvious question, but faith goes beyond belief. Hebrews 11:1 reads: "Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen." In this passage we notice an essential factor of faith - trust. While having confidence in God and his promises is an important part of faith, so is action. According to the letters James sent to the believers in Jerusalem, a man is justified by works and faith. He told them that "For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also" (James 2:24-26). Real living faith demands action. The word "living" implies action of its own. So, to pursue a life of true faith we must do as the bible says. A person is considered righteous by what they do, not by faith alone. Remember that the word "faith" is a verb. A verb is an action word. Now, you may be asking what action should come from faith. True faith in Christ always produces good works. A person who has real faith will do good. An action that fuels faith is done for God's glory, by God's strength, because God demands. Good works honor God. Ephesians 2:10 says we are created for, “good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them.” Micah 6:8 says, “Human, the Lord has told you what goodness is. This is what he wants from you: Be fair to other people. Love kindness and loyalty, and humbly obey your God.” It is evident that God wants us to do justice. Not just appreciate justice or assent that it is good, but do justice. Micah emphasizes the need to love kindness. Not just be kind, but live by it. Kindness demands that we live charitably, speak peaceably, and serve others passionately. Lastly, he asks that we humbly obey Him. We are to not allow ourselves to be overcome with pride because we walk with Christ. It is important to remember that we are not the center of universe, but we are given the grace and opportunity to share about the One who is. By focusing on the principles, they will enable us to live faithful and fruitful lives for God.
